Marin Alsop received an Honorary Membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society onstage at the Royal Albert Hall during last night's BBC Proms concert. 

The RPS said, 'Marin Alsop is an inspiring and distinguished artist who is also a role model for the 21st century musician. She is as widely recognised for her imaginative programming as for her deep commitment to education and to the development of audiences of all ages.' Other conductors to have received the award include Sir Mark Elder, Pierre Boulez and Bernard Haitink.

Alsop is, of course, no stranger to Gramophone's readers having received numerous Editor's Choice accolades for her recordings, as well as a Gramophone Award for her recording of Bernstein's Mass in 2010. She was also named Gramophone's Artist of the Year in 2003.
